Recreation Opportunities in Wishek

Beaver Lake Park is gorgeous!  It’s a Minnesota Park in North Dakota, and it is THE stopping point on your road trip to Montana.  You want a place that’s halfway to Montana?  Check.

How about a place that’s got wonderful scenery?  Check.

It’s got great camping spots, wonderful hiking, a lake with fantastic fishing, and trees galore!

If you’d like to make a reservation, which you should!, go to North Dakota’s Beaver Lake website.

"What about Green Lake?" I hear you ask.

Green Lake, also known as Doyle Memorial Park has amazing fishing.  You’re not going to pull some record breaking walleye out of here, but there are so. many. fish.  Do your kids care about getting a 12 pound walleye?  No, they don’t.  That walleye would pull them into the lake.  They care about having fun!

I still remember the time I went fishing with my dad, and we caught 63 sunfish in 2 hours.  I’m reasonably sure, at this point, that it was the same fish over and over, but whatever.  It was fun.  I remember it 30 years later.  You want to make that memory with your children?  Come to Green Lake.

Please call (701) 329 - 0375 to speak to Robin Opsahl to reserve your RV spot.  Electric and Water are available.

North Dakota has a Moose Hunt?!

Heck yea we do!  You can hunt Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer, Moose, Pronghorn, Elk, White-tailed Deer, Pheasant, Turkey, and Goose.  I have personally seen Elk, Pronghorn, White-tailed deer, Pheasant, Goose (duh.), Turkey, and Mule Deer around Wishek.  Wishek will even roll out the red carpet for traveling hunters.  We have what are colloquially called, “hunter houses” available for rent in town, and the Wishek JDA has compiled a list of local land owners and hunting guides you can get in touch with.  Give the JDA a call at (701) 452 – 2371 for suggestions.

Outside Pursuits Article

Outside Pursuits has done some great research on the surrounding hiking landscape for Wishek!  Find it here.

Surprisingly, I had never heard of the Prairie Bells Grotto referenced in the article.  Great research by Outside Pursuits!

Speaking of hiking, one of my favorite memories with my son was walking "to the end of the world."  It was a simple hike out to a hilltop a couple miles north of town, but there were so many little things to see on the walk, his imagination ran wild, and it was a splendid fun little hike.

Birding

There are over 365 species that make up North Dakota's birding checklist and many of these can be found right here in Wishek! Countless acres of Conservation Prairie Program land surround Wishek, providing home to unique species of birds such as Baird's sparrow, LeConte's sparrow, Sprague's Pulpit and more!

City Park

Located on the south side of town, the Wishek City Park is a complete facility offering a kids' playground, picnicking, RV camping, baseball diamond, basketball courts, and tennis courts.  The park was established in the 1930's by the WPA (Works Progress Administration).

Please call (701) 452 - 2189 to speak to John and reserve your RV spot!  Electric is available.

Swimming

The community swimming pool is located at the west end of the Wishek City Park.  Built in the 1930's by the WPA (Works Progress Administration), the pool house was built from native rock.  For decades, the pool has been open from June to August.  It has served thousands of children and adults looking for a "summer fun time" in Wishek. There are day passes and season passes available. Open daily from 1-5 and then from 7-9.

Follow the pool on Facebook.

Golfing

The Wishek Golf Course and Community Clubhouse is located just 1 mile west and 1/4 mile south of Highway 13.

Originally, the 9 hole golf course was named the Beaver Valley Golf Course.  Later, the name was change to the Lloyd E. Rigler Golf Course in favor of one of Wishek's favorite sons.
